If you’re a new or prospective owner of a recreational vehicle, then you may not know all the tips and tricks of ownership. This includes knowing where you should camp. There are so many different RV resorts, campgrounds and parks out there, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed by your choices and end up going with an unsuitable option if you aren’t careful.
But choosing a good, solid RV campsite is essential to your trip’s success, so it’s good to consider all your options carefully and do your research. Here are some top tips for choosing a good RV campground to stay in.
RV Parks and Resorts
One of your options is an RV resort or park. These are generally going to be the most luxurious and costly campground option, but you’ll more than get your money’s worth in terms of the amenities available. RV parks have features like laundry facilities, hot tubs, pools, playgrounds and maybe even camp stores with basic supplies, snacks and ice. You could get a discount if you choose to stay at one of these resorts for a longer duration, like a week or a month. And you’ll likely be nearer to a city or town so you can easily go grocery shopping or run other errands as necessary.
National or State Parks
Another option for camping is to go and visit a national park or state park, where campgrounds are often in plentiful supply, although it may be more of a challenge to find an open spot during the peak season (spring, summer and early fall). So make sure to get your campsite booked well in advance of your planned trip. State and national parks are cheaper than parks or resorts and give you intimate access to the tranquility and beauty of nature.
Boondocking
Finally, you can choose to go boondocking or dry camping. This term simply refers to camping in your RV without hook-ups for water and power or any place to dump your holding tanks. Dry camping requires you to plan ahead a bit more to ensure you’re properly prepared for the task, though, so you’ll want to have the right supplies, including a full freshwater tank and some propane for fuel. You may even want to consider installing some features on your RV to make it more suitable for dry camping, like solar panels for sustainable power. You may boondock on public lands and it’ll be free, which is a major point in its favor!
